Fake eBay The Balm – Meet Matt(e) Trimony Palette Review & Swatches

IMG_1514

So a long time ago I ordered a palette on ebay. Now makeup on ebay is usually something I avoid, unless it’s a brand I know of, since you never really know what’s in their makeup. For some reason I’m fonder of trying a no-brand makeup on ebay, than getting fake ones. Now I’m not sure of this claim, but I feel like no-brand makeup is more “safe” than fake makeup is. The reason behind why I decided to get this palette, is for entertainment purposes only, and I’m kind of a daredevil so I just had to try it.

For over 10 years now, the beauty industry has been fighting with all of this fake makeup wandering around. Fake makeup is basically makeup that copies an original brand from head to toe regarding packaging. What’s different about the real deal as posed to the fakes are the product on the inside. These people who are manufacturing this type of makeup are seriously pros, as they can create packaging that is identical to the original. All of these fake goods are very easy to get your hands on sites like Ebay, Aliexpress, Wish etc. and is incredibly cheap. The only real way to avoid getting scammed is to buy directly from the brand’s website or from a trusted retail seller. On one hand I feel bad for the brands, that their being copied in such manner and on the other hand I do understand why some are curious to try them out.

I feel like I’m obligated to add some sort of disclaimer, which I understand, so please keep in mind that I’m well aware about the conditions fake makeup can be produced under as well as the possibly harmful ingredients. I do not encourage anyone to buy fake cosmetics! At the same time, I’m not going to judge or tell anyone not to buy fake makeup – I just want people to be responsible by doing their research and here after deciding whether it’s something they want to purchase or not. Now let’s move on to the review:

The packaging

The packaging is actually very cute with the guy on it, and looks quite legit. The entire packaging is made of cardboard, and even has a protective cardboard sleeve. Inside the palette there’s a big mirror, which is always a plus in my book, and it has this magnetic closure. All the writing looks quite similar to the real deal, and even the ingredients are written on the back. However I’m incredibly skeptical that those are the real ingredients. On the back there’s a QR Code that you’re able to scan, which of course I did. Do you want to know what’s crazy? It actually worked, and took me to the official website where I was able to see a makeup tutorial. Kind of scary how they’re able to get all those details, but at the same I’m actually kind of impressed. One thing that is quite annoying is how the shadows stain the cardboard, which make it almost impossible to wipe off. The reason why my palette is looking kind of dirty. Down below you can compare the 2 palettes to each other. The genuine one to the left, and the ebay palette to the right.

The shadows

Now the most important part – the shadows. I don’t detect much of a scent to them, slightly cardboard like, but that could be from the packaging. The shadows are soft, and quite pigmented. The most pigmented shadows are the 3 in the middle (The orange, red & purple). The shadows definitely alter from the original, and you’re especially able to see the difference when you compare them side by side. All of the shades are matte, as they are supposed be, and blend nicely as regular shadows. Honestly I’m very impressed, and I feel kind of guilty to say that it’s actually quite good. On the swatches on the photo I have layered the shadows a few times, so you’re able to clearly see the colors. One thing I must mention is how the shadows are slightly chalky & patchy, but still quite manageable.

Conclusion

I’m extremely impressed with the quality of this fake palette, both the packaging as well as the shadows. I didn’t have any negative reaction from the shadows, however the red shade did slightly stain my lid. Again I want to emphasize, whether you decide to buy these fake products is 100% up to you, but doing some research is always a good idea.

  1. I’ve always loved the look of this palette but the price puts me off, so I can definitely see why people choose to buy fakes, though I personally wouldn’t. Great post love, I always think it’s good to shine a light on how easy it is to be conned with fake makeup for people who may not know! xxx

    1. I know of many buying fake makeup, especially on Facebook groups and the majority seems very pleased with it. But I don’t know if that’ll ever be my thing – You do hear about how these products are made, and some gross ingredients that could potentially be in them 😦 But yeah I never wanna look wrong at people for using fake makeup, that’s definitly their own choice 🙂

Thank you for commenting, Beautiful ❤

  3. The major problem in india is that the shipping costs more than the product so you know fake products are used often and another reason here I see a lot is that people just want the brand name fake or not is not there concern 😔

  4. Aw that’s so too bad :/ I do get it, the shipping prices can be quite high at times, especially when buying from the US 😦 There are many horror stories on what has happened to people when using fake products, but I guess sometimes people have to experience things for themselves.

  5. I’m always a bit dubious of buying make up off eBay because I’m afraid it’ll give my skin a reaction. Whether it’s fake palette or not the colours look fabulous. I’m not that adventurous with colour I wish I was. Great post. Look forward to more. Xxx

    1. I don’t know if there’s a bigger risk at getting a reaction more than regular makeup from stores ? :/ I totally get why people tend to stay away from fake makeup, since you can never really be sure what’s actually in them.
Thank you for reading Holly 🙂

  6. Thank you 🙂 I’ve heard mixed review on the genuine palette – some saying it was really good, and others saying it’s nothing special :/ So I’m not quite sure if I should get the real deal.

  7. Thanks for sharing. It’s true. It can be scary to buy online. There’s a risk of obtaining fakes. For example like that Anastasia Beverly Renaissance Palette. I saw a Youtube video on it. Even a makeup vlogger friend of mine too who did a video on Fake vs Real MAC lipstick. Thanks for enlightening me

    1. The thoughts I always have in mind is, if it’s too good to be true, then it probably is hahaha. Those who are making fakes have become very good at it, and it can be hard to tell apart from the real deal! So the best place to buy a palette would be from a trusted site/store 🙂 Thank for commenting.

  8. I love those colours. It’s absolutely stunning.
I’d also just like to say that you are brave to admit that you bought and used a fake makeup product. I find that some beauty bloggers can be very judgemental when it comes to the use of these fakes but for me it’s like if the person knows the risk and doesn’t promote that it’s original then each to their own.
Love your blog and can’t wait to see some new posts. 🙂

    1. I’m in love with these shades ❤ I even think I prefer the colors in this one then the original. Thank you for being so kind! I'm the same – people can do whatever they want, but at least look up what you're getting into. I don't want to promote fakes, as I always believe it'll be much safer to get the real deal. I appreciate you commenting, and leaving such a sweet comment ❤ Looking forward reading you future posts 🙂

    1. I’m not so sure how it is on Amazon :/ I think majority of the products are genuine, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see fakes being sold on there. It’s always a good idea to read the sellers feedback 🙂

  9. Sadly, I haven’t been able to view your comparison photo’s, they’re showing as empty squares on my screen. The packaging looks so authentic though! Thanks for the heads up about there being Balm fakes on eBay, as I have a few of their products on my watch list there. I was scammed on a Lime Crime lippy a while back, that was really obvious though when comparing it side by side with a real one. Amazon is apparently notorious for fake cosmetics. I can’t speak from experience though, having never bought any from there.

    1. Oh that’s weird 😐 Is it maybe because you’re reading the post from your phone? I’m glad this post was helpful 😊 ebay is filled fakes, and it’s unfortunate that some people aren’t aware of it 😕 I didn’t know Amazon had lots of fakes as well 😳 I’m sorry you’ve been scammed before ☹️

      1. Thankfully just the once and I got a refund. I dread to think how many people have been scammed though, not been aware of it and it’s put them off a certain brand because of the poor quality of the fake. 😏
