A few weeks ago, I visited a small, beauty store, GOB Skincare, in central Copenhagen. This store is specialized in raw, natural ingredients that women in East Africa have been using for generations.  The store has a concept that I’m not familiar with in Denmark, and for that reason I got excited to visit them. I was welcomed by one of the owners, Najad, who was very knowledgeable about the different products in the store and the ingredients. The main focus in the store are especially different types of oils and butters. But there are also other types of skincare, bodycare and more sold at the store.

I got to the test both their African Black Soap as well as a Jojoba Oil, which was designed specifically for my skintype and needs.

African Black Soap – 80 DKK/13 USD.

African Black Soap comes in a small, heavy glass jar and contains 50g and has an expiry date of 6 months after opening. The first thing I noticed was the consistency of the soap, which reminded me of some sort of wax/paste. You scoop a little bit out of the jar, mix it with some water and then I massage it onto the skin, which is damp. It does foam slightly, and feels soft, while feeling deep cleansing on my skin without being too harsh. The soap smells earthy and very natural, as there isn’t any added perfume or any other ingredients, beside the natural soap.

I got a tip from Najad about the soap. She told me if the soap felt too drying on my skin, I could mix a drop of oil with the soap. I didn’t feel the soap was too drying for my oily skin, but it wasn’t moisturizing either. I tried out the oil tip, and I could feel after cleansing, that my skin felt more moisturized and softer.

The ingredients in this product are natural, raw, simple and all recognizable.

  • Cocoa Pod Powder
  • Plantain Peel Powder
  • Coconut Oil
  • Shea Butter
  • Water
  • Palm Kernel Oil
  • Grapeseed Oil

Blend Your Own – Jojoba Oil 170 DKK/28 USD:

At GOB Skincare they have a super cool concept they call “Blend Your Own”, which revolves around getting a customized product that fits your needs. I was asked about my skintype, after which we had a chat about what product could fit in with my skincareroutine. I got a customized 100 ml jojoba oil, where Vitamin E and a sebum controlling ingredient was added. The oil comes in a dark, glass bottle, which has a pump.  The oil has a dark yellow tint and feels moisturizing on the skin without being too heavy. I’ve been using it every night in my routine, as a finishing product. I take half a pump, warm the oil between my palms and then pat it into my skin. It hasn’t been easy introducing oils into my skincareroutine, as I already have oily skin that is prone to breakouts. I haven’t had the best experience with using oils on my face, and for that reason I couldn’t help being skeptical. The jojoba oil has been a positive surprise – my skin is always wonderfully soft and glowy, when I wake up in the morning.

I also got the opportunity to try out some brushes they sell at the store from the brand PHB Ethical Beauty. The brushes are cruelty free and vegan, as well as being free from “bad” ingredients as artificial fragrance, silicone, colorants and more. Displayed here is the Powder Brush and Blush Brush. The bristles were soft, and they did a decent job for makeup application, plus their prices are quite reasonable. The brushes were okay, I mean they worked fine but I wasn’t as impressed with them as I were with the skincare products.

Ever since I started using the oil and the soap, I’ve barely had any blemishes. I don’t know if that’s a coincidence or if it really is based on these two products. What I can say is, that my skin has reacted very well to these products. The soap has been cleansing my skin without being drying, while the jojoba oil has been acting as a wonderful finishing product, that has made my skin soft. If you want to introduce natural skincare and ingredients to your routine I can highly recommend GOB Skincare. You will get a great service in the store, where your needs will be accommodated and a place to get answers to your skin related question.

    1. Thank you for reading 🙂 I’m happy you liked it. It’s a small, danish store and unfortunately their products are only available in Denmark. But if you ever come to Denmark, you know of a place to visit 😀
