Nyx Total Control Drop Foundation Review

One of my favorite makeup items, that I love to buy, are foundations and I’m always looking to find the next great foundation. I was very curious about the Nyx Drop Foundation when it first came out, and by that point I already knew I wanted to try it. It was mostly the positive reviews and large shade range that caught my attention as well as the packaging. They also sell a matching brush, which I didn’t bother buying as I have enough brushes already and it didn’t really stand out to me.

My skintype: Oily & Acneprone. NC30 in MAC.

My shade: I’m in the shade “True Beige” which is a very good match for my NC30 skin. It’s a light-medium shade with a yellow undertone. Nyx has a great shade selection, as there are 30 shades in total, which I find awesome for a drugstore brand. If you click here you will be able to see alle the shades swatched as well as which skintone the particular shade will match.

Amount & Price: 140 DKK/14 USD. As always, the price does vary depending on your location. You get 0.43 fl. Oz./13 ml.

Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Water/Aqua/Eau, Glycerin, Vinyl Dimethicone/Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer, Propylene Glycol, PEG-10 Dimethicone, Isododecane, Dimethicone, Phenyl Trimethicone, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Propylene Carbonate, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol. MAY CONTAIN / PEUT CONTENIR (+/-): Mica, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499). *For most recent ingredient list, please refer to packaging*

Coverage: The coverage really depends on how many drops you use. This is buildable and goes from providing light coverage to medium-full. Nyx claims 2 drops will deliver light coverage, 3 drops medium coverage and 4 drops will deliver full.  I don’t agree with those claims and don’t find 4 drops provides me with full coverage.

Longevity: I consider this to be an everyday foundation. It looks quite good the first 4-5 hours, but after that I notice that my oils kinda break down the foundation in some parts of my face. I also notice the foundation starts rubbing off in my T-zone area, where I get most oily. But I find when I use a good mattifying setting spray I can avoid the foundation from rubbing off or breaking down.

Oil-Control: I don’t consider the oil controlling properties to be good or bad, it’s more like in between. It looks quite good the first 3 hours, after that I notice some shine coming through. If I pair the foundation with a mattifying primer and mattifying setting spray I can go up to 5 hours before I start getting oily.

Packaging: The foundation comes in a small, frosted glass bottle with a black dropper.

Feel: It’s feel very weightless on the skin, I believe this is the lightest foundation I’ve tried so far. The consistency is also quite runny. The finish of the foundation is semi-matte.

My thoughts: Overall, I really like this foundation. It feels very lightweight and I love how I can build the coverage as I please. But I feel like the price for a drugstore brand is ridiculous. The Danish price is 140 DKK, which is around 22-23 USD, and the amount you get is less than half then what you usually get. This means to get the usual 28-30 ml. I must pay 45-46 USD, which is basically the same price as other high-end brands. Looking past the price point I actually quite like it. Because there is so little product I know it won’t last as long as my other foundations, but I love using it as an everyday foundation. It provides me with a nice amount of coverage and finish, and I’ve been using it constantly the past few weeks.

  1. I keep flip flopping between wanting to buy this foundation. I love the shade range, particularly with the yellow and olive undertones, and the dropper packaging. But I dislike that you get less than half the product of a standard foundation 😦 I can’t believe how much more expensive it is in Danish currency, yikes! Still, I’m glad that you still liked the formula 🙂

  2. I have been wanting to get my hands on this for so long but I too find it expensive for a drugstore brand. The quantity is too less. Here in India it’s around $19 which is still pretty expensive for 13 ml.

  3. Although I’ve heard so many good reviews on this and I love the packaging I think I would skip on this because the quantity is so less for the price and I’d rather get another foundation with better coverage and more affordable price haha! Great review! xx
