Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture Palette Review & Swatches

I’m not gonna lie…. I was very quick to judge the Subculture palette by Anastasia Beverly Hills when it first came out. As soon as the negative reviews on Youtube started to appear I instantly thought how unlucky all the buyers must be and how disappointed I would’ve been if I spend my hard-earned money on a palette that I disliked. ABH consistently gets rave reviews on their products and this was the first time I saw so many people complaining about one of their products. Most people were having issues with the major fallout. But ABH said they would make new batches pressing the shadows harder to decrease the fallout. I’m not sure if I have a palette from an old or new batch, but I do want to share my thoughts with you on this palette.

Price: The palette retails for 465 DKK/42 USD on their official site. Every now and then I have seen this palette go on sale, so you can definitely get it at a lower price. If you’re a US reader you can get this palette for just 25$ at Macys until 07/07.

Packaging: You get the palette inside a cardboard box with the brand logo and name of the palette. The palette itself also feels like some sort of cardboard material that has a magnetic close. The front of the palette has a velvet feel of velour, which adds some luxury to the palette. Each squared pan/shade weighs 0.7 g/0.02 oz. each (9.8 g/0.20 oz. in total). Plus is has a mirror on the inside. A long the palette you also receive a dual ended eyeshadow brush, which I know people have mixed feelings about. I love and use the brush almost every day, and I appreciate them including a brush.

The shades: In the Subculture palette you will get 14 different eyeshadows. I found a brief description of each shade on the ABH site, that I want to include as I think they do a great job with the descriptions. The palette includes 11 matte shades and the remaining being shimmer shades:

  • Roxy – Ultra matte muted coral
  • Electric – Duo chrome lime-gold
  • Fudge – Ultra-matte warm bronze
  • New Wave – Ultra-matte citron orange
  • Untamed – Ultra-matte tarnished green
  • Edge – Ultra-matte gold mustard
  • Rowdy – Ultra-matte blackened purple
  • Axis – Ultra-matte blue-green
  • Mercury – Ultra-matte slate grey
  • All Star – Ultra-matte vintage wine
  • Adorn – Metallic bronze
  • Destiny – Ultra-matte sage green
  • Dawn – Ultra-matte sand
  • Cube – Duo chrome pink pearl

Swatches: All of the shades were so easy to swatch ,with my finger, as they were VERY pigmented! All of the shades I went over twice except for “Cube”. I went over that one a few times, only because it wasn’t showing up on the photo as well. The shadows are soft to touch and have a smooth texture. I’m not usually interested in cool toned palettes, but I feel like the shades mesh so well together and I love the colour of each shade. Some of them I’m not as comfortable using for an everyday look, but I’m sure some of you like bolder eye looks than me. I did have problems with two of the shades. The first one was “Electric”, which would pick up the product beautifully when using my finger. But I could not get it to stick to my brush. I did try spritzing my brush with Fix+, which did help a little, but not as I would want it to. The other shade I had issues with was “Edge”, which I was very excited to try out. In the pan it looks like a mustard yellow shade, but once you apply and start blending it unfortunately turns into a muddy, orange shade.

My thoughts: I feel like the shades in this palette have really opened up my eyes to cool toned shadows. I’ve always been a neutral, warmtoned kind of girl, but these shades are gorgeous. But these shadows are so pigmented, that I have a hard time working with them. I feel like you must be very experienced with creating eyelooks, as the shadows are too pigmented for my liking. A slight dab is really all you need, but even that can be too much. I also feel I have to put in a lot of effort, since they’re so pigmented, to buff and blend the shadows so there aren’t any harsh lines.  This also results in me spending a long time doing my eyeshadow, because I’m cautious and not very experienced with such pigmented shadows. If you’re someone that’s not afraid of pigment, then you’re going to love it as it’s seriously the most pigmented eyeshadows I’ve ever tried. Okay I’ll stop using the word pigment now.

The fall out isn’t as bad as I had imagined. I can definitely tell that the shadows aren’t as hardly pressed as some other palettes I own. The key is to be gentle and softly pat your brush into the shadow – don’t swirl it! Some of my brushes have more “scratchy” bristles and I find I get more fall out when I use them in comparison to a softer brush. Plus, I always need to tap off the excess as they’re kind of powdery. The longevity is awesome, the shadows adhere well to my skin and I don’t necessarily need to use a primer. To summarize this whole post shortly I would say that MUA’s or experienced makeup lovers will most likely get the most use out of this palette, while beginners might find it difficult to work with.

  1. I didn’t gravitate to the colours in the beginning when it was released, however after many months of looking at it andcalso using more colour of late, I think I would love this palette very much .. thankyou for the great review Noreen 😊

    1. The colors are what caught my attention to begin with as they were so different to any other palette I had. I find most of the shades are wearable, it’s only the two green shades that I don’t really use. Thank you for stopping by, Luisa ❤

  2. Really great review! I have very similar feelings – if you have a lot of confidence in your makeup skills and the time to execute them, you’ll get stunning looks from this palette, but if you want a quick and easy look, this is not a good option.

  3. The colours are too bold for my liking but I saw Wayne Goss doing a video on this palette after a entire controversy it had. He said the same thing as you, that you softly dab your brushes on the shades and since they’re so pigmented they’d show up. There’s no need of swirling and hence avoid fallout

    1. I do remeber he made a video on it, but I don’t think I ever got the chance to watch it. I’ll have to see it later tonight 🙂 I usually do my eye makeup first, so I don’t mind if there’s a little fallout as I just dust it off before applying my base

  4. I’m always suspicious when youtubers all start bashing the same product. I’m glad I read your review although it really confirms all the things they said. I’d love to extend my ABH collection because I think they make such good products, but I have a feeling I’ll be in the same situation as you: not really knowing what to do with shadows that are so difficult to blend. It’s a such a pity! I’m not surprised it’s regularly on sale 😦
For easy looks, I highly recommend the soft glam palette
    love xx

    1. I felt so sorry for Alissa Ashley when everyone were bashing her for being extra and not knowing how to makeup. But once their favorite youtuber started dissing this palette, they would believe them? Like that makes no sense in my head. Either way I love ABH products, but I feel like this palette was made to be used by professionals, which I’m far from. I actually do have the Soft Glam and I love using that one ❤

      1. I feel the same, I think she seems very honest and trustworthy in her reviews 🙂 Yeah I did see the new palette – I do love the matte shades but there’s too many shimmers & purple shades for my liking.

    1. The shades and pigment are awesome ❤ But I'm not as comfortable using this as e.g. the soft glam palette. The shades are not some I'm used too and I'm still not sure which colors go well with each other. This is a palette I use when I know I have a good 1 full hour just to do my makeup in 😀

  5. I agree with your review – it isn’t a palette I’d recommend for people who want to be out the door quickly or beginners. Overall though, I don’t think it deserved the negative reviews.

    1. The negative reviews were really out there, so when someone did a positive review it sounded odd. It’s a not a bad palette at all, but I think people were a bit taken back with the way the shadows were pressed into the pans as well the crazy amount of pigment.

  6. I think the colour combination might initially scare people but when you look at it better, you see some colours good for everyday look, great for summer and for someone who is tired of all the red toned palettes coming out lately😊

    1. I initially thought Woah these are some gorgeous colors, but are they going to be too much? So I was plesantly surprised with how many of the shades I felt comfortable wearing 🙂 Maybe it’s more suited for night wear, but I can also do looks to wear during the day ❤ Yeah red & warm toned palettes are some of my favorites, but seriosly I don't need anymore of them 😀

  7. I can’t believe how pigmented this is! Was always a bit iffy on the shades in this but the more I see it the more i’m drawn to it. Feel like for autumn time it would be really great. I’ve wanted to try an ABH palette for so long but always been a bit put off! Brilliant review gal xx

    1. The pigment is just too much and I was a bit taken back with how pigmented they actually were! Oh yeah this palette would be beautiful for Autumn, I know this palette is on sale here and there and for a great deal as well if you ever wanna purchase it without paying the full price 🙂

  8. I have some how never actually tried anything from ABH, but I have heard some great things about their eyeshadow palettes. I particularly love the look of the gold shades in this palette, especially adorn. The mattes also look extremely pigmented on your swatches, which can be hard to find in a matte shadow sometimes. Thanks for sharing, I may have to try ABH shadows one day 🙂 x

    1. Adorn is such a stunning shade, so it was a bit of a bummer that I couldn’t pick up with my brush very well :/ I usually find shimmer shades to be a tad bit better than mattes in general when it comes to eyeshadows, but in this case the mattes are just as good 🙂 ABH makes so many great products and I can highly recommend them – especially their brow products!

  9. “…I also feel I have to put in a lot of effort, since they’re so pigmented, to buff and blend the shadows so there aren’t any harsh lines. …” It is always nice to see a review on a hyped product from a famous brand. Your swatches and all your pictures are amazing – more more amazing – I dare say – than the pallet itself…..lol…. I heard form many users that it takes then more time to blend – if it blends at all. I have the Modern Renaissance and happy with it – but this one – I can find better quality shadow with same colors in other palettes.

    1. Thank you so much for the kinds words 🙂 It definitely takes more time to blend in, not only because of the pigmentation but also because most of the colors are so vibrant and need to be faded out. The MR palette is one I’ve been eyeing on as well, but at the moment I have too many palettes laying around and collecting dust, so I need to get better at using them before I buy any new ones 😀

  10. I am the same as you… After seeing so many negative reviews I was not even feeling up to considering the palette. 40$ are wayyyy to expensive for a palette that is not absolutely MAGICAL. Or at least for me, who is 2 weeks away from officially being a broke as fluff university student with a humungous debt so…

But your swatches looked really stunning and I am a sucker for cool toned shadows. Somehow this palette feels like the opposite of my Styling Eye Palette… I am intrigued. 😏😂
Sorry for the rant. I am somehow feeling really talkative today

    1. 40$ is not a cheap price, especially not when you’re a student like the both of us. I do uderstand that you don’t feel like paying the full price. But do keep a look out as I’ve seen this palette go on sale a couple of times 🙂 The smoothness and pigmentation of the shadow really impressed me.
