The World’s Most Powerful (Best) Face Mask – Aztec Indian Healing Clay

You read the title and I’m standing behind it. I’ve been wanting do a thorough review on this product for forever now, but I kept pushing it back and I don’t even know why. If I had to get rid of all of my facemasks in my collection except for one, then there’s no doubt that this is the one I’m keeping. I first came across this mask as being a bestseller on several online sites, being recommended in forums and also being mentioned and recommended in several articles. So, I ordered it and gave it shot 4 years ago and I still love it just as much then, as I do now.

What is it?

This face mask only consists of one ingredient, 100% natural calcium bentonite (green) clay. Bentonite clay is a clay that typically forms after volcanic ash ages. It’s an ingredient that contains different minerals and is known to detox and absorb toxins from the skin and body. Clay products in general are great for people with oily and acneprone skin, like me, as they deep cleanse your skin and removes any excess oil.

I’ve only used this product as face mask, but it also states on the tub that it can be used as body wraps, clay bath, foot soaks, inset bites and chilled clay for knee packs. I’ve also been seeing people use this as a hair mask, which I may try out at some point.

Where can I get it?

Again, there are multiple sites you can get this clay from. I get mine from Vitacost – the clay has a fair price and has international shipping. However, I just noticed that it’s out of stock at the moment, but you can sign up with your mail and they’ll let you know when it comes back in stock.

What’s the price?

The price is honestly ridiculous for the amount and quality of the product that you get. The price does vary depending on where you buy it. I usually get mine for around 6 USD/40 DKK.

This tub contains 1lb of clay (450 g.) and claims this will make up for 10-15 facials in total. That is a total lie… It actually lasts me an entire year when I use it once or twice a week, which is just amazing.

How do I use it?

The primary recipe for mixing up a batch of the mask, is to add the powdered clay with either water or apple cider vinegar. I don’t have any exact measurements, but I usually do 1½ tsp. of clay and then 3½ tsp. of apple cider vinegar. That was the basic recipe I was using the first month of using and afterwards I started experimenting with other ingredients, such as;

  • Rose Water
  • Turmeric
  • Matcha Powder
  • Witch Hazel
  • Activated Charcoal
  • Different Oils

The direction says to apply quite a thick layer, which I don’t initially recommend. Start out with a thin layer for the first few times and then judge whether your skin can handle a thicker layer. I wear the mask for a long time (40-45 min), which I wouldn’t be comfortable recommending to other people. I would say you should be the personal judge of, how long you want to wear it. The direction on the tub recommends 5-10 minutes for delicate skin and 15-20 minutes for normal skin.

Why do I love it?

This is my go-to mask for when my skin is acting up. Even when my skin is behaving well, I like to use this once a week to keep my skin blemish free and looking healthy. What I especially love about this mask is, that you can spot a difference immediately after use. My complexion looks more even and has a healthy glow. I have super large pores, which it also minimizes the appearance of and if I have any blemishes it will reduce the size of them or bring them to the surface. My face also feels baby soft and is a lot smoother than it did before application.

What you should be aware of?

You should be aware that this mask is not suitable for all skin types. It’s a quite drying mask which also feels quite intense on the skin. On the direction it says; “Feel your face pulsate” and it’s no joke. It doesn’t hurt, but you can feel your face pulsate and getting tighter as the mask starts drying up. It’s quite a weird sensation but it’s also something you get used to.

You will also notice your skin looking red, when you remove this mask. But the redness does go away within 20-30 min.

Also be careful with the apple cider vinegar as it’s super strong and acidic. I also find there’s a difference in the acidity level in different ACV’s. So, when you’re first starting out, approach with caution and perhaps even do a 50/50 ratio of ACV and water.

It’s recommended NOT to use any metal utensils when mixing up this mask. I’m not that great with the whole scientific reason behind why you shouldn’t, but it has something to do with the metal that makes the clay lose its negative charge. This will cause the clay to lose most of its healing properties.

The last thing I want to mention is that the mask is hella annoying to remove and I don’t recommend washing your face in the sink, as it might clog up your drains. Instead I fill up a big bowl with warm water and I wet a washcloth that I use to loosen up the mask and GENTLY wipe it off. When I’m finished, I dump that bowl of water in the toilet… No, you did not read that incorrectly, that’s what I do.

Even though this mask is a bit of a hassle when it comes to removing it and leaving your skin looking like a tomato afterwards, it really is worth it. The results I experience is worth it all. This mask deserves all the hype and recognition it gets.

  1. I’ve tried it and it’s a blessing to blemish prone skin—especially at *that* time of month when my skin would go haywire. I haven’t used it in a while. Might have to give it a go again!
